Product Tips & Information

Q: What's the difference between a ballpoint and a roller ball?

A: While the ballpoint pen is the most widely sold writing instrument, we actually sell many more roller ball pens. However, the ballpoint remains a top choice for many writers and is well-suited for all writing styles and business applications. The oil-based, paste ink dries on contact. Refills write for miles and last for approximately one year. Ballpoint refills are available in a number of colors and point sizes.

The roller ball is easy to use, a hybrid system that combines the "wet ink" feel of a fountain pen with the convenience of a ballpoint. Roller ball ink dries virtually instantly, and can be used in personal correspondence and business applications.

Q: What size fountain pen nib should I use?

A: It depends on various factors, including what kind of writing you do most frequently and your personal style. A medium nib is recommended for everyday writing. A fine nib is preferable if your handwriting is small, you work with numbers or draw. Some individuals prefer a broad nib for signatures and bold writing. We recommend you start out with a medium nib. Keep in mind, there are no standards among manufacturers. If in doubt, consult with us.

Q: What are oblique fountain pen nibs?

A: They are nibs, usually medium or broad, especially suited to natural handwriting. All nibs, especially gold ones, will conform to your individual handwriting, but oblique nibs will be especially comfortable with a more extreme slant.

Q: Should I purchase a gold nib?

A: Gold is generally more flexible than other materials and will conform to your handwriting more readily. Most gold nibs are coated with iridium at the tip for longevity. Steel nibs can be perfectly acceptable for everyday writing.

Q: How do I fill a fountain pen?

A: A number of different inking systems are utilized by pen manufacturers. Here are instructions for the most common.

Cartridge: Make sure you have the correct ink cartridge. Point the pen away from you and unscrew the barrel. Remove the empty cartridge and insert the new one (push past the initial resistance to break the seal). Replace the barrel and you're back in business. If it doesn't start to flow immediately, give the cartridge a slight squeeze. If it still doesn't flow, provide a small amount of moisture to the nib. This will start the natural 'wicking' process. Be carefull to keep the pen nib pointed away from you and anything which could be stained.

Converter: Converters take the place of cartridges, and are filled from an ink bottle. With a squeeze-style converter, immerse the point in ink and press the converter several times. With a piston converter, immerse the point and twist the knob until the piston is all the way down, then draw it up slowly.

Q: Why does my fountain pen clog?

A: It may need cleaning (see next question).

Q: How do I clean a fountain pen?

A: You should clean your fountain pen at least every two months if used daily. Use lukewarm water only, never hot water, ammonia or any other type of cleaner. You should remove the nib section and flush it under a stream of water. If it doesn't flow clear, place the entire nib section in a paper cup and let it soak at least overnight. Rinse the next day. Still not rinsing clear? Give it a second day. This will usually take care of any residual ink. After a few times cleaning your fountain pen you will acquire a feel for each pen's needs.

Q: Why does my roller ball skip?

A: It is likely because the paper surface is unsuitable. Roller ball ink is liquid and needs be absorbed. Papers with a glaze or coating prevent the ink from being absorbed and can cause skipping. Also, be sure to keep your pen capped when not in use. Roller ball ink can evaporate and dry out the tip.

Q: Why does my pen sometimes leak on an airplane?

A: The newest pen technology is virtually immune to this problem. However, low cabin pressures can wreak havoc if there is a significant amount of air in the refill. Always try to fly with a full pen.

Q: How can I remove ink stains?

A: Your first line of defense is to keep the ink from setting. Some recommend clear carbonated soft drinks, such as club soda. Hair spray may also work. When you launder clothing stained with fountain pen ink, use household ammonia. Ink stains on your fingers can be partially removed by washing with soap and water.

Q: How can I repair my fountain pen?

A: If your fountain pen skips, try a few simple solutions before sending it in for repairs. First, clean it thoroughly, even soaking the nib overnight in water if necessary. Make sure you are filling it properly (some pens must be "bled" before writing). If you are writing on chemically coated paper that has a slick feel, wipe the pen point with a soft cloth (not facial tissue) and try writing again. If your pen still skips, try a different paper. If your pen skips on the down stroke and the point spreads at the tip and/or has separated from the feed underneath, the nib is sprung. Try to lighten your touch. If the pen still skips, you may need to have the point reworked or replaced. If you think there is a problem - give us a call.

Q: Do I need to use the same brand of ink as my pen?

A: Try whatever brand of ink you would like. They're all slightly different. Experiment and have some fun with various colors and flow.

Q: How long will my ink last?

A: Properly stored and securely capped, fountain pen ink should last indefinitely. If sediment has formed in the bottle, it is a sign that some of the water has evaporated and the ink should not be used. Generally, manufacturers recommend that you not use fountain pen ink that is more than several years old.
